sticky-shed syndrome refers to a type of format rot present in magnetic tapes most commonly ones manufactured before the 1990s. it occurs when the magnetizable iron-oxide coating in the tape's binder absorbs water, undergoing a chemical process known as hydrolysis. when this occurs, the polymers that act as a binding agent become unstable and decohere, rapidly losing all the cherished memories recorded within.
